Canvas rebrands to Untapped, using untapped.io

After being found in contempt of court, Canvas quickly changed its branding to Untapped.

Diversity recruiting company Canvas has rebranded to Untapped following a trademark dispute.

Last year, the company changed its brand from Jumpstart (and jumpstart.me) to Canvas (and canvas.com). But another company with a Canvas trademark cried foul, and a judge agreed with the other company. He issued a preliminary injunction that ordered the company to change its brand.

Facing immense time pressure, the company decided to use the brand it has been using for its podcast called Untapped. While the name is good for what the company does, its new domain name,  untapped.io, is a step down. Canvas.com gave the business credibility; the .io domain doesn’t. If it wants to acquire the .com domain, it’s currently listed for sale for $900,000. That’s not out of reach for the company, given the money it has raised.

Whois records show that the company obtained ownership of the domain name between January 12 and January 25.

The canvas.com saga isn’t over despite the name change. There’s a cybersquatting claim on the table, and Untapped doesn’t own the domain outright. It acquired it in a lease-to-own deal.
